I came across the following article related to content in a "kids movie" that I felt needed to be shared! What's infuriating is that it appears there are forces who have censored this article and removed it from the East Macaroni Kid site, making sure it doesn't reach a wide audience, and for that reason I have picked up the content on this blog:

We took the family to see the new movie, Show Dogs, last week at an advance screening. The premise is great for a kids movie. Max is a talking police dog (voiced by Ludacris) who is paired up with a human partner, Frank (Will Arnett) to infiltrate a prestigious dog show and rescue a kidnapped baby panda. Being a tough dog from New York, Max has no business competing in a dog show, but uses his street smarts to outperform the competition to get closer to the inner circle of kidnappers. Along the way, Max learns lessons about trust and the need to accept help from others. The usual hilarity ensues with dog farts, bites on the rear-end, and slap-stick bonks to the head which elicit giggles from the audience. There are also the obligatory jokes that go over the kids head to entertain the parents with plenty of meta jokes that reference the actors work outside of this movie. The keen ear will pick up on the multiple cameos voice performances from the likes of Shaquille O'Neal, Gabriel Iglesias, and RuPaul.
What could have been solely a fun movie for kids that would get my highest recommendation is damaged by a dark and disturbing message hidden, not so subtly between the fluffy dogs and glamorous parties of the show dog lifestyle. As part of any dog show, contestants are judged on their abilities and physical attributes. One part, in particular, is the inspection of the dog's private parts. Being that Max is new to competing, he needs to learn the process so his partner, Frank, along with a former show champion work to get him ready for the final round of the competition. Since the inspection of the private parts will happen in the finals, Frank touches Max’s private parts to get him use to it. Of course, Max doesn’t like it and snaps at Frank for him to stop. Max is then told by the former champion, who has been through the process before, that he needs to go to his “zen place” while it happens so he can get through it. More attempts are made by Frank to touch Max’s private parts, but Max is still having trouble letting it happen and keeps snapping at him.
The day of the finals come and if Max doesn’t let his private parts be touched, he may lose the competition and any hope of finding the kidnapped panda. It all rests on his ability to let someone touch his private parts. The judge’s hands slowly reach behind Max and he goes to his “zen place”. He’s flying through the sky, dancing with his partner, there are fireworks and flowers-everything is great-all while someone is touching his private parts.
During the movie, I kept thinking, “This is wrong, it doesn’t need to be in a kids movie. Everything else in the movie is good fun except for this.” Afterward, my husband mentioned that he picked up on this message too, as did my mother who saw the movie with us. My daughter, on the other hand, said her favorite part of the movie was when Max got his privates touched and the funny reaction he had. I decided to use that moment to help reinforce what we have taught our children since they were little, private parts are just that, private. We talked about how I didn't feel that part needed to be in the movie. We talked about how we never let anyone touch our private parts, what they should do if anyone tries. We reinforced that if anyone tries to touch their private parts or asks them to touch their private parts they should talk to us about that. We talked about different ways children can feel pressured to participate in those types of behaviors. A child predator is usually known to the child, rarely are they a stranger. We talked about bribes or threats, we discussed the fact that that type of behavior is not a game, we reminded them the same rules apply to kids as well as adults. Approximately one-third of offenders are themselves juveniles, with 23% of reported cases of child sexual abuse are perpetrated by individuals under the age of 18 and only 14% of children who suffered sexual abuse were violated by an unknown perpetrator. (Victimsofcrime.org) Although you cannot prepare a child for every situation the more knowledge you give them the stronger their defenses are!
As a survivor of child abuse, this is something I feel strongly about and am passionate about helping others protect their children. I also fiercely strive to give my children the knowledge and tools they need to protect themselves. Those little humans are the greatest things in the world! Children are our greatest resource if they have already been a victim of abuse this movie has the potential to be very triggering for them.
With the #MeToo movement and all the talk of sexual predators in Hollywood, I couldn’t help but think this message, that is blatantly in the open for adults to see, but over a child’s understanding, is meant to groom children to be open to having people touch their privates, even though they don’t want it. It gives them the idea of a “zen place” to go to mentally when they are touched. I'm a make lemonade out of lemons type of girl, so let's take this movie and use it as a great teaching tool. I'm not going to encourage or discourage anyone from seeing this movie, I only want to help parents make an informed decision. If you do take your kids I will encourage if you to have an educational and powerful conversation with your kids. They will have fun watching Max infiltrate the show dog culture and you will have a teaching opportunity that won't feel awkward or uncomfortable because you are just talking about a movie. Let's take this as an opportunity to build abuse resistant children because they will be smarter than predators, and Hollywood's tricks!"

DeleteWe haven't seen it... and I do think it's weird that they would use up so much time in the movie for that subject. However, I don't believe they purposely put it in to "groom" children. I think it's more likely that the movie industry as a whole currently lacks talented writers to write good family-oriented movies. That's ones of the reasons we've only gotten a lot of regurgitated remakes lately (most of them being pale representations of the originals). I do, however like how the writer of this article used the opportunity to further educate their children. Because in the end, what we really need to do, is teach our kids to be free thinkers and to not just accept what movies or any media tells them to believe. In the end, we need to know that, when we're no longer around, they can make their own decisions about what's right and what's wrong.

DeleteI saw this the other day, and went through the gamut of thoughts on it. My first reaction was "Oh my gosh, it was a one liner that was over in 30 seconds, and are kids really going to take away that it's OK to be molested in a bathroom because they saw this." Then I thought "Well, dang, isn't that how kids start accepting things, like the frog in the hot water. Every little bit that says just stand there and accept someone groping you leads to the big idea, doesn't it?"
ReplyDeleteSo after simmering on those ideas, I landed at the following. As usual, these are two extremes, and the answer is in the middle, with a *bit* of the truth from both. YES, because they have anthropomorphized the characters, it DOES suggest that if something unpleasant is happening to you just take it instead of react, and that is bad. However, this actually happens to people in real life. Why do you think they post a picture of a calm forest or beach scene above my gyno's bench while I am getting a PAP smear? Because I have to go to a happy place while some guy has his hand in my hoohah, and not bite his hand. But that's not the same as being molested...HOWEVER...even I have to know the difference because there are times for red flags to go off even with doctors.
SO...in the end, I think it was tacky, but a joke aimed at adults who also get private part examinations and commisterate. I do not think this is a bad scene teaching kids to be groomed. I think what we need to remember is that if this scene from this movie is the only thing our kids see and know about touching private parts, we have some work as parents. What our children see from this movie, from other children, from TV, from the web, from non family adults they interact with will be out there in their face, and we should have had these talks with them before society did. If you want your children to know it's important not to be groped in a BAD way, you let them know. Don't rely on NOT seeing this movie to do that. If your child comments on the touching part as funny, explore that with them. Understand that they probably see it as funny since they instinctively know there is a social taboo on private parts, but don't know why. Talk about it on their level. Get books on the subject if you need to.
But most of all, do not trash this movie because you didn't want to "go there" with your child. Someone or something out there will *go there* at some point with your child, and sticking your head in the sand about that is the worst thing you can do. THAT is how kids end up getting molested.
Our kids are very young and we have already talked to them about this. We know it is rampant in the world.I understand your point of view, and I still think it is not a movie we will see because touching any private parts of any animal and making it a big point is not something to explore in a child's movie, or any movie. Also why would we teach kids that their privates are something that they should ever be judged on? That could make them seriously self-conscious. Furthermore, this may lead kids to want to start touching their pets' private parts. It is just odd, not funny, and unnecessary in the movie. I will not let my child see this because it goes against what I will teach him about body safety. Movies stick with kids. Kids watch the same movies over and over. It has nothing to do with not wanting to talk to your kids about body safety and everything to do with the fact that the movie brainwashes your kids otherwise. Not acceptable.

ReplyDeleteOMFG people really think too much about this! If you know anything about about dog shows this is just part of the dog examination to make sure that there’s no abnormalities. In order to win a dog show your dog needs to be perfect in everyway, even physically. A lot of people breed their dogs with other dogs of the same breed that have a champion blood line because this means that more then likely their animal will be of “champion” blood line material which means less likely to have health abnormalities. Also, these people that are blowing it out of proportion I assume you don’t allow the Dr to preform annual physicals on your children & that your kids don’t have hormonal, or reproductive issues.

So you can either take this as a normal dog show regulation or you can unnecessarily blow it out of proportion. �� This is just a bunch of unnecessary drama.

DeleteIt's not PG-13 though. It's PG. And if we were just talking about animals, it might be fine - of course we'd have no idea what they were thinking. This is anthropomorphized animals, which means we respond to them in much the same way we would people experiencing the same thing. It was unnecessary and I, for one am glad someone mentioned it before I saw it, even though my kids are older.

DeleteAs someone who also shows dogs ..... I was torn about this review. I will have to see the movie. However with that being said, again, male dogs only DO have the judge reach back to make sure there are TWO testicles because only 1 is a serious fault. that being said, and w/o yet being seen, maybe parents could've just 1- ignored it, if kids mentioned that, just tell them that's how show dogs are judged..... 2-written that their muscles are being examined and maybe Max was just very ticklish. what adults see in a movie is not exactly what kids notice.

You can have conversation with neurotypical kids about this but what about special needs children? I have one with limited verbal ability and severe autism. I don't need him thinking from this that it's ok to let people touch him. What about other kids damaged by FAS that have short and long-term memory issues? This sort of thing is appalling on so many levels. So many special needs adults, children and adults with the mental understanding of children can be harmed by this and CAN'T be talked to about it. It's not just about "normal kids".
ReplyDeleteI just heard an ad on the radio from Focus on ththe Family PROMOTING this movie to Christians (broadcast on Z 88.3 radio in Orlando). Could you please write to FOTF & your local Christian radio stations to explain the real message behind this movie so they will stop promoting it - or use more wisdom in how they describe the movie (good & bad). Of course, they didn't mention the molestation part that seems to be a climax (sorry, it's the correct grammatical term) in the story - or defining moment.

To paraphrase one reviewer on Facebook: it's not just the private parts content but the fact that it follows the same progression of grooming that most who have been molested have experienced. Including dissociation during the actual act. The message is there no matter how small or insignificant it may seem and we truly feel this is content which should not be included in a kids movie (or any movie for that matter).

Having been a part of pediatric examinations of sexually abused children in my capacity as a nurse, I have personally witnessed tiny little ones go off to their "ZEN" place when the doctor has to touch them to look for injury. It is THE MOST horrifying thing I have ever seen. The child is no longer there, there's just a blank, dead look in their eyes. To have a movie tell little ones that to "get thru it" you have to go to your Zen place? That's disgusting, truly disgusting, and should not be acceptable in a kids movie AT ALL.

If liberals don't want to be seen as supporting molestation, perhaps they should call Marion Zimmer Bradley and Maya Angelou to the carpet, instead of making their stories of grooming, molestation, and rape required reading in schools.

That is really disgusting and may explain a lot regarding a situation in our family. With the parents blessing, we were trying to adopt my nephew's girls but DSS decided that we were unfit! They kept twisting my words in the interview as if they had already made up their minds against us. I hate the system!
DeleteGive me a break. ASFA is not there to steer kids away from family. It is actually policy to place children with family whenever possible. Yes there are exceptions. But family is always first choice for placement. If you think there is money in foster care, you're completely misguided. Additionally, what does this have to do with this movie?

Sexual abuse of child actors is so prevalent in Hollywood, known, convicted pedophiles are still being hired to work on children's programs, this was not included by accident or out of ignorance of the danger of this message.
DeleteMy friend is a counselor for sexually abused children and she says about this movie "Kids get sexually abused a lot. 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 5 boys will be sexually abused before they are 18. Sexual predators do a great job of grooming kids to think it’s ok. 90% of kids will be abused by someone they know. So let’s just use this movie as an example. You go over to uncle or babysitter's house to watch a movie. He has a super fun movie about dogs. You watch this movie as a 5 year old, or 8 year old and you see that while the dog feels that something is off other people tell you to ignore it. That is what the abuser will do. Grooming involves desensitizing a child to feel like they should ignore their gut feeling when something feels off. Also, kids don’t know they have “limited rights”. Most kids get confused about rights when it comes to their own body ESPECIALLY when it is an adult they know. So....this kind of movie can and will be used to perpetrate on children."

Even though the touching of a dog's private parts is an aspect of dog shows, blah, blah, blah, still, there is really no need for this side storyline. I see it not only as sexual trauma programming, overt with the suggestion of going to a "zen" alternate reality, but even with anthropomorphizing of this character, the action has a beastialty overtone.
ReplyDeleteThis movie really ought to be reported to the appropriate authorities (those that raise awareness and fight against child predation), otherwise the smutty directors and producers in Hollywood will continue to push the boundaries in this regard. Particularly in an animated film, there are no accidents here. Every vocal and every screenshot is meticulously thought out and the 'animals' personified. To insinuate that there is no agenda here is to truly have one's head in the sand.

ReplyDeleteThe sticking point that really could/should be changed is the "practice" touching beforehand. Sure, maybe this was/wasn't intentional, but it is there. Our culture has been influenced by unchecked predators and thereby "cultivated" opportunities for predators for so long that it can go unnoticed if we don't stand up and point out out.
From my understanding, the purpose of an advance screening is to see how audiences react to the movie so that any necessary changes can be made. Here's to hoping the "practice" scene and Zen place can be changed to something more appropriate.
Either way... Teach your kids!

DeleteThis was a funny movie. I don’t think that was meant for the message to send for it’s ok to do it to kids. I can see where some might think that, but in every pedigree dog shows they have to be touched. Maybe used wrong words, but I surly wasn’t thinking bout a child being sexual abused while watching this movie. Surly parents would tell their children it’s not ok for an adult too touch a child. Surly they would explain that when your dog is in a dog show that they have to be touched. Maybe worded wrong, but it’s a dog not a human. Some people get butt hurt over the smallest things. It’s a good movie and as a mom to 6 children and 2 grandkids none of mine thought that it’s ok to be touched wrong or go to happy place if they were touched. It’s called teaching your children right from wrong. I was not thinking of children being sexually abused while watching this movie so therefore I didn’t really pay attention to that part.

ReplyDeleteWe had several litters of puppies while my sons were young and one of my sons thought that we should refer to the females by the industry specific term for them. I reminded him that we were not really dog breeders, so it would be better for us to just call them females and leave the technical jargon to the actual breeders. The same principle applies here. I doubt that the movie was spot on accurate about every other aspect of dog shows, so why pretend that the sexual content has anything to do with authenticity? Thank you for the information.

The early sexualization of children serves but one motive, to groom children and the entire population in order to NORMALIZE PEDOPHILIA. ReplyDelete"What could have been solely a fun movie for kids that would get my highest recommendation is damaged by a dark and disturbing message hidden, not so subtly between the fluffy dogs and glamorous parties of the show dog lifestyle. As part of any dog show, contestants are judged on their abilities and physical attributes. One part, in particular, is the inspection of the dog's private parts. Being that Max is new to competing, he needs to learn the process so his partner, Frank, along with a former show champion work to get him ready for the final round of the competition. Since the inspection of the private parts will happen in the finals, Frank touches Max’s private parts to get him use to it. Of course, Max doesn’t like it and snaps at Frank for him to stop. Max is then told by the former champion, who has been through the process before, that he needs to go to his “zen place” while it happens so he can get through it. More attempts are made by Frank to touch Max’s private parts, but Max is still having trouble letting it happen and keeps snapping at him.
The day of the finals come and if Max doesn’t let his private parts be touched, he may lose the competition and any hope of finding the kidnapped panda. It all rests on his ability to let someone touch his private parts. The judge’s hands slowly reach behind Max and he goes to his “zen place”. He’s flying through the sky, dancing with his partner, there are fireworks and flowers-everything is great-all while someone is touching his private parts."

Just look at cover photo, it looks like house coat is split at groin level and dog has a boner at first glance!!! I would not permit my kids to watch movie just by that cover! Where is the morality?, how degenerate! Shame!
ReplyDeleteThis message is very subtle. And maybe kids won’t takeaway that it’s ok to allow others to touch my private parts. But what about kids who are identifying with this scene because their is someone who is currently taking advantage of them, they can relate to not wanting to be touched this movie is not sending a message to stop the touching. To have the courage to speak up and tell someone what is going on. 1 in 3 girls will experience being moloested before age 18. Maybe people are reading into it. But this movie is subtly suggesting that we need to go along to win in the end. I find that message is false.
ReplyDeleteI'm wondering if it was meant for kids. Just because a show or movie has animation in it doesn't mean it's meant for kids.
ReplyDeleteIf you have not personally seen the movie you really do not know how long of a scene it is. It could be a 30 second scene, it could be a 3 minute scene. Unless you yourself watch the movie and see for yourself what is being talked about do not pass judgement on it. If you do not want your children to see the movie that is fine, but they are going to beg you to see it if their friends have seen it. So you watch the movie first so that you can give them your own reasons why you do not want them to see the movie, not someone else's reasons. No I do not work for any movie company, I am a parent that does my own research instead of relying on the word of others. I have found that everyone has a different opinion of things. My daughter wants to see this movie so I will watch it first then decide if I will allow her to watch it. Which I probably will because we have already had the "talk" about "private parts" and she is at the age that she does understand. So please watch the movie yourself before making a judgement on it. Just like with the critics, most of the time I don't agree with their opinions either.
